Overview

Starr Smith circled the globe for many years as an international journalist and observer of the world's most colorful places and intriguing people. He has journeyed to more than a hundred countries on six continents.

In this new book, he turns his keen eye and skillful narrative style to his own world -- the South. Here are thirty vivid and loving stories of Southern places and people, including moving accounts of those same Southern qualities that have been written about so dramatically by his fellow Mississippians William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams.

Smith paints on a large canvas, covering ten states. He has roamed the cities and the countryside, the highways and the byways -- from serene Beaufort, South Carolina, to New Orleans, his favorite city in the world; and, in between, from the Seelbach Hotel in Kentucky, made famous in The Great Gatsby, to the Naval Aviation Museum in Florida. Smith introduces some of the giants of Southern tourism, including Winton Blount of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Jack Kyle of the Mississippi Cultural Exchange, and Dr. David Bronner of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

This is no ordinary travel book. Smith writes from the heart, with insight and personal experience -- after all, he knows the territory as few others do. A former NBC Radio reporter, he writes in a crisp broadcaster's prose with a storyteller's flair. This book is as timely as a Southern sunrise, and as poignant as a faraway train whistle in a lonely Southern night.
