Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The school which Ziggy, Rico, Jerome, and Rashawn attend is sponsoring a talent show. The prize is $200, which they intend to use to liven up their clubhouse in Ziggy's backyard. They practice their singing and also work out a dance routine to go along with their song, and once they have their glittery costumes, they are confident that they will win. Then, however, they meet Tulip, a new girl at school who has a wonderful voice. During the tryouts she belts out a song, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," that stuns everyone. Ziggy and the Black Dinosaurs are no longer confident of their "hands down" win. When they get to know Tulip, they find out that she is homeless and sleeps a car with her mother. She and her mother were displaced by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, so it is obvious that she needs the money more than Ziggy and the gang. Who will emerge as the winner? Is it possible for there to be more than one winner? To further understand segments of this story, the author has included discussion topics for each chapter in the back of the book as well as additional activities which are related to the story.
