Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Maria Lamattina
Since the story is an adaptation of a script for the PBS KIDS television series, Super WHY!, the characters of The Stars in the Sky should be familiar friends to the show's tiny viewers. That familiarity should provide some scaffolding for the early readers for whom the book is intended. The setting is Storybrook Village, and the "episode" begins with Whyatt receiving a computer message asking for help: Princess Pea wants to play on a rainbow, and her mom tells her she cannot. Apparently, when confronted with a problem, the inhabitants of Storybrook Village call on all Super Readers and consult books for a solution. The book they find has the same title as this "Station Stop" Level 2 Reader. The characters transform into superheroes, enter the world of the book, and help its heroine, Ella, reach the stars. Once out of the story world, Princess Pea realizes that she can use her imagination to play on a rainbow, and she does. Although the positive message here—that reading is a superhero activity, and that our imagination can takes us anywhere—is a worthwhile one. The book is not one that lends itself to classroom use, though. For viewers of the show, however, it may be a means to engage children in some independent reading. It is part of the "Super WHY" series. Reviewer: Maria Lamattina
