All Music Guide - Tom Semioli
Sugarcult's debut disc is a quasi sugar-coated power pop album with punk overtones and a healthy dose of self-effacing humor. Escapism, skepticism, and a devil-may-care view of the world around them are the primary themes that weave their way into the lyrics on this high-energy stripped-to-the-bone collection by this frisky So-Cal quartet. As evidenced in the fiery anthem "Stuck in America," vocalist Tom Pagontta joyfully proclaims "everyone's talkin' 'bout blowing up the neighborhood/all I ever wanted to do was get away." "Saying Good-bye" is a pathos-filled paean of teenage heartbreak with an explosive chord progression so familiar that documenting it would seem like an accusation of plagiarism, which, in rock & roll of this nature, is an exercise in futility. "Bouncing Off the Walls" is yet another joust at the perils of romance, only this time the protagonist dips into his parent's cocaine stash to relieve the pain. On Start Static, Sugarcult has mastered the don't-bore-us-get-to-the-chorus approach to near perfection.

    Awesome

They are even better live! This CD, and their other one "Palm Trees and Power Lines" are great. I saw them with Green Day and New Found Glory, personally New Found Glory shouldnt have played and Sugarcult should have played more. Awesome group.

    Awesome Band!

I love this CD. It's everything I want in a band. They have great lyrics, not every song sounds alike, it's music for guys and girls, and most of all, it's alternative music. I reccomend it to anyone who likes the modern day alternative rock, and yes, I realize thats a large category. Hope you enjoy it!

A great CD by an even greater band

This is an amazing CD, all the songs are really well done. Sugarcut is a great band, and if you have not had the chance to here some of their music, you are really missing out. I wish I could tell you my favorite songs, but they are all equally as great. This is definitely a band to tell your friends about.

They Easily Become your New Favorite Band!

First, HONESTLY you are missing out if you don't know about Sugarcult or have never heard of their music and this album!!They are a GREAT band combining fun and story-telling lyrics with instrumental melodies in the music. You have a bit of two different types of sounds on this album but Sugarcult keep their signature as a fun punk band everyone likes. I don't think they make any bad songs, ever..my favorites include Pretty Girl (The Way), Hate Every Beautiful Day, Saying Goodbye and for a softer setting and mysterious that has a story behind it Underwear the last track which Tim Pagnotta (leadsinger/guitarist)said he wrote about when he noticed people have an interest in deaths, watching murdering in movies, etc. and thought he'd write a song about it well done with lyrics like ''Take the life and hold it underwater/wash the hands of all these things ive done...All the eyes on every sunday paper/pictures of the horrid things ive done'' truly remarkable album.
