Overview

David Brin's Uplift novels are among the most thrilling and extraordinary science fiction ever written.  Sundiver, Startide Rising, and The Uplift War—a New York Times bestseller—together make up one of the most beloved sagas of all time.  Brin's tales are set in a future universe in which no species can reach sentience without being "uplifted" by a patron race.  But the greatest mystery of all remains unsolved: who uplifted humankind?

The Terran exploration vessel Streaker has crashed in the uncharted water world of Kithrup, bearing one of the most important discoveries in galactic history.  Below, a handful of her human and dolphin crew battles armed rebellion and a hostile planet to safeguard her secret—the fate of the Progenitors, the fabled First Race who seeded wisdom throughout the stars.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In its original paperback editon of 1983, this novel won both the Hugo and Nebula awards. Brin's extensive revisions make this first hardcover edition an SF event. What remains most impressive is the complex background of political, cultural, linguistic and many other connections and missed connections among innumerable different species. Against the backdrop of an ancient spacefaring conglomerate, whose shared traditions have not halted their wars, the upstart Earthlings humans, dolphins, chimpanzeesalso stand divided. Brin raises questions not only of understanding but of ethics, for a "patron'' race may genetically uplift another only to indenture them. His depiction of the dolphins' gains and losses now that they've become space pilots is particularly moving. Although Brin's characterization and storytelling are less adept here than in the work he has since written, this is one of the outstanding SF novels of recent years.

Perhaps the best of the series

superbly written...engaging story that resonates far beyond the story...fully realized world and situation, characters are well rounded enough, with some having enough complexity to be very real...the most fully realized characters are not human, but dolphin...brilliant portrayal of another type of mind (not an easy thing to accomplish)...the wonder and mystery of the "whale song" runs through the book and is not easily dismissed or forgotten.
The next book, Uplift War, is also superb.

    Awesome Book and Series

The book is set in a galaxy where there are many alien races that "uplift" other races into sentience. This is a fantastic start to the second trilogy in the Uplift universe. I highly recommend this and anything else by David Brin.

    My Favorite Fiction Novel...Ever

I first read this book as a young man, aged 18 or 19. I read a lot of books before...and have read a lot of books since. Very few come close to giving me the pleasure this book has given me. I know I have re-read it at least a dozen times, and each time I picked it up...I had trouble putting it down. There are many aspects that appeal strongly to young, male readers (action, sex, aliens, space-faring dolphins, a talking chimp, etc). However, the book has held up to the test of time better than the vast majority of fiction I have read in my life. Even now as a "more mature", middle-aged man...I still enjoy the STORY in the book. My 17 year-old son saw it on my bookshelf a few months back, read it, and loved it, too. There are few (maybe none!)books we have both read and both liked so much. He's a budding writer and I'm a geeky engineer...not a lot of tastes in common. Read this book...and enjoy the experience for years to come!

    Amazing

I've been hooked on SciFi since 3rd grade (H.G. Wells). This is one of my favorite scifi books. I've re-read my copy many times. Bought all the other uplift books by David Brin, but I consider this the best of the Uplift series, maybe because it was read first, and introduced so many of the new concepts.

    WOW

I just loved the book. It was probibly the best book that I have ever read. Any one who reads science fiction needs to read this novel. I just can't give it enough praise.

    An epic masterpiece

I've read literally hundreds of science fiction novels in the last few decades. Most have long since disappeared in the mists of memory. That includes onetime favorite authors like Niven and Heinlein. 17 years ago, I had the fortune of reading 'Startide Rising.' Simply wonderful. Brin created a richly detailed universe. The planet Kithrup came alive as I dove into the book, literally a page-turner that I stayed up all through the night to finish. It's a wonder as Brin deftly juggles a humongous cast of characters, building to a dizzying climax. One of my favorites of all time. Alas, 'The Uplift War' was a disappointment. I'm looking forward to reading 'Heaven's Reach,' which should finally end the story started here.
