Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In his first book, entrepreneur Moss, a former Apprentice contestant, offers average people hope that they can start their own business and have fun doing it. His book is drawn from interviews with 21 entrepreneurs who make money doing what they enjoy and comes across as a kind of pep talk for those who are gainfully employed but want to be on their own someday. One of the secrets offered by the book is to "underestimate your obstacles." A number of the interviewees did not really know what they were getting into when they formed their own companies and may have been more reluctant to do so had they known what was involved. The book's central thesis is that it is still worth it and that it is better not to really know what you are facing. Among the numerous books and case studies already available on the same topic, Guy Kawasaki's recent The Art of the Start provides inspiration but also offers many practical suggestions on how to raise money, hire people, and function in the entrepreneurial mode. More advanced books, such as Thomas W. Malone's Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century and his The Future of Work describe the realities of running a small business in greater detail for practicing professionals. Moss's book is well suited to a general secondary school or public library because it offers a cursory overview of running a successful business.-Stephen Turner, Turner & Assocs., San Francisco Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
