Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As one in a series of "Starting Off with...," this book gives young children a taste of mathematics specific to numeracy. The back cover identifies it as "approved by educators and math advisors," but the content is not in sync with mathematics instruction today. The very first page has the reader counting from zero, which isn't how children learn to count. The information about patterns, an essential early mathematics concept, is poorly described and illustrated. The sentence, "Numbers sometimes go up in twos," is an example of a limited explanation of a number pattern. Counting is given a broad treatment at a superficial level. The illustrations are fair to mediocre and resemble early math textbooks. Math terms fill four pages at the end of the book under the heading "Word Bank," yet not all terms used in the book are found there. The term "set" is missing. The final page is a "Counting Quiz" which is misnamed and depicts how not to attract young children to mathematics education. 2000, Barron's, $5.95. Ages 5 to 7. Reviewer: Jacki Vawter
