I was disappointed to learn that this was categorized as a "novel." According to other reviews, it is actually a biographic account of the author's own experience. Despite the author's attempt to engage in a much larger dialog about gender and eating disorders, it falls short of inspirational. Predictability, a linear narrative, sentimentality,  and a lackluster rendering of an important social issue overshadow any potential redeeming qualities. At best, this is a novice attempt to write a first "novel." "Starved" is an ultimate disappointment.
