I'm going to be studying abroad in England this coming fall and I was recommended by a friend to buy this book to help me start. I enjoy cooking but I'm not at all good, but this book has super easy steps of cooking simple meals and making sure you have enough to last you a couple weeks. The only thing I was hesitant of was that some recipes require a number of ingredients, so I would have to watch my budget when it comes to grocery shopping. But I like this a lot so if you're starting college or studying abroad somewhere, I would recommend this one to start off your skills in the kitchen.
I have the 1982 version of this book, which I received as a gift around 1984 when I was in college. I still have the stained, water-damaged, dog-eared copy in my substantial cookbook library. It is by far the most-referenced cookbook in my collection. My daughter recently asked if she could bringit with her to college (years down the road), so I checked to see if it is still in print. Lucky me, not only is it updated, but I see there is a vegetarian version as well. This review is for the older version, but I intend on purchasing the newer and vegetarian editions. The recipes are simple, relatively inexpensive (extremely poor college students like I was may balk at some of the ingredients for some of the recipes, but for most folks the whole book uses inexpensive and easy-to-find ingredients), and really quite tasty. We have favorites that are easy to triple or quadruple for a family dinner after a busy day at work.. Absolutely recommend!
