From their Denver-based research facility, leading weight-loss experts Dr. James Hill and Dr. Holly Wyatt set out to discover why Coloradans are so slim and how they stay that way. They studied the patients in their weight-loss clinic along with the lean people of Colorado. They also looked for clues in the National Weight Control Registry, a scientific database of thousands of successful "losers" across the country who have dropped an average of 70 pounds and kept it off for 6 years. Their comparison of these groups led to an aha moment—the discovery of 6 simple habits that keep people in a state of slim.

With proof that you can live like a lean Coloradan anywhere, Hill and Wyatt used those 6 habits as the foundation for their revolutionary plan, the Colorado Diet. Unlike most "diets," this one reveals the secrets of people who are in the state of slim, whether it’s because they’ve always been slender or because they’ve lost weight and kept it off over the long term. This is critical, because what you need to do to for long-term weight maintenance is different from what you do to lose weight. You must repair your metabolism. Hill (The Step Diet) and Wyatt direct the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at the University of Colorado; studying the patients at their clinic and utilizing the National Weight Control Registry (a scientific database cofounded by Hill), they conclude that the true test of an effective diet is whether the weight stays off once it’s lost. Colorado has the lowest obesity rate in the nation and Coloradoans live an active lifestyle with foods that are “fresh, flavorful, and seasonal.” Focusing on studies and examples of those who have succeeded, Hill and Wyatt offer a plan that promises permanent weight loss. Their strategy relies on repairing metabolism, which, they claim, is often stuck in fat-storing mode; in three phases, the diet reignites, rebuilds, and reinforces metabolism so that it functions at topnotch capacity (Mile-High Metabolism). The plan requires daily exercise, but participants can choose either a structured or flexible plan and can mix and match from a number of options, including yoga, walking, and tennis. James O. Hill is executive director of the Anschutz Center for Health and Wellness at the University of Colorado and the author of The Step Diet: Count Steps, Not Calories to Lose Weight and Keep It off Forever. He and Dr. Wyatt co-founded the National Weight Control Registry. He lives in Denver, CO.

Holly Wyatt, the Anschutz Center's associate director, is a physician and clinical researcher at the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado and the national director for the Centers for Obesity Research and Education. She lives in Denver, CO.

    Major Fault in Design

    I love the idea behind the book and everything about it. The major flaw, in my opinion is that they do not give any alternative diet plans for those who are Vegan or even Vegetarian.

    Otherwise it would have been an amazing book.

    NO sugar coating, just the facts.

    This book doesn't offer overnight success or unrealistic life styles that most of us aren't selfish enough to stick to. There is no sugar coating in the words to make this seem easy or fun, just the facts of what you need to do to be in a state of slim. You must be active and eat less of fats, sweets and even savory, but enjoy what you can eat and let your body learn to love it to. Being active is the biggest push right after eating properly.

    When I grew up everyone was thrilled to know about vitamins and nutrition was taught at my home and at school. With that not being the case anymore I see little toddlers walking around stores with doughnuts in their hands. Yikes! Toddlers! What are we teaching our children. While my body isn't happy with as much cabbage family plants as they want me to eat, I'm learning to work around it. This book was highly tauted on all the news show in the Denver area and I recommend it also.
