Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Kids will first be drawn to the unusual shape of this book which is cut out to resemble the eastern border of Texas. A conversation of questions and answers about the state between Samuel the cowboy and Merideth the student provide the basis of this nonfiction book. The questions begin with the history of Texas, starting with the Native Americans and then covering other topics such as animals, geography, cowboys, music, places and events. There is a lot of humor mixed in with unusual fun facts making this a great addition to students needing to do research on Texas. However, researchers will find it difficult to locate information within the book without a table of contents or index. A general map shows the major cities and some points of interest along with the interstate highways and bordering states. Overall, this would be a great addition to a library's states collection. It is part of the "State Shapes" series. 2001, Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers, Ages 7 to 13.

    Howdy from Texas, y'all!

This is an adorable book for young readers and parents. It gives basic geographical, historical and demographic information about the Lone Star State in a very entertaining way. The illustrations are adorable, and so are the characters that take us on a tour of Texas. I recommend it for elementary school classrooms, and for young readers who would like to learn about Texas. Yee-ha!
