Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati J.D.
Sessalee is the new girl in town—the town of Maplewood, New Jersey, that is. She and her family have just moved from Texas to the Garden State. Native New Jerseyite Edward offers to show Sessalee around her new state. Key historical facts and legends are covered in a question/answer format throughout this book, which is one in the publisher's "State Shapes" series. The tone is breezy and the illustrations are cartoonish on pages that are shaped like New Jersey on their outward edge. Much material is covered in a quick fashion, so that entries do not always flow in a logical sequence. The state shape format is clever and will appeal to children, as well as quirky facts about New Jersey. Readers learn that it has the tallest roller coaster in the world, an aquarium where visitors can swim with sharks, and it was home to the first drive-in movie and professional basketball game. This book does not offer an in depth study of the state, but rather a drive-by, buffet-style approach with a positive outlook on a much-maligned state. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati, J.D.
