Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Laura Ruttig
This unusual chemistry title focuses on phase changes from solid to liquid, liquid to gas, and so forth. By focusing on this topic, West is able to guide the reader easily through concrete examples of many complex scientific concepts, including molecular bonding, the ideal gas law, and the water cycle. Two fascinating chapters focus specifically on phase changes at home, looking at how the chemistry of matter is going on all around us in our houses, and phase changes in industry, examining industrial uses for phase changes. Examples from the home environment include air conditioners, aerosols, saunas, and barbecue grills. Industrial examples include steam power, freeze-dried foods, and the recycling of aluminum and glass. Outstanding further resources are included as well, such as copies of the Periodic Table (with electron configurations), a table of Atomic Masses, and several pages of websites and books to explore. Overall, this book is perfect for attracting reluctant readers to the study of science; excerpts could easily draw readers into wanting to know more about how chemistry plays a role in everyday life, from global warming to the refrigerator.
