Reviewer: Diane M Tomasic, EdD, RN (Slippery Rock University )
Description: This book acquaints readers with the statistical techniques most commonly reported in research literature for the health professions. The previous edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose is to present statistical techniques in the most understandable way possible. This information is needed to evaluate research studies, especially in light of math anxiety that plagues many individuals. The authors have made a complex subject easy to understand.
Audience: The target audience is nursing students and nurse researchers. Health professional researchers will also find this book useful. The authors have taught courses in this area.
Features: This book covers organizing and displaying data, descriptive statistics, introduction to inferential statistics and hypothesis testing, and parametric and nonparametric statistical techniques commonly reported. The focus is on use of and interpretation of the statistical techniques rather than mathematical calculations. Computer printouts and examples from the literature demonstrate statistical reporting. A data disk is provided for application exercises. Tables for common statistics are provided. Many chapters contain application exercises with answers.
Assessment: This book is a must for understanding common statistics reported in the literature. Chapters have been revised and updated, including the glossary. Additional information on confirmatory factor analysis has been added. The authors' comments on the printouts provide for easier understanding.
