Overview

"Your book has changed my perception and attitude towards statistics. It is very well written, the language is completely user friendly and the progression of new concepts within each chapter is fantastic. Although my class is only on chapter 5 at this point, I have found my interest in the concepts and order in which you introduce them becoming greater. I thank you with very much appreciation as I was someone who dreaded taking statistics and thought I hated it!" - Jessica Maes, graduate student

The Fourth Edition of Neil J. Salkind’s bestselling text introduces students to the fundamentals of basic statistics in an informative, personable, and unintimidating way. The author expertly guides students through various statistical procedures, beginning with basic descriptive statistics and correlation and graphical representation of data and ending with inferential techniques including analysis of variance.

"...offers a slow-paced, entertaining introduction to the topic...begins with a discussion of the 'language' of statistics, then goes on to cover both descriptive and inferential statistics."

"Excellent user-friendly resource. Only gets better edition after edition. "
Bruce Bailey
“I am taking statistics at the graduate level for a Masters program, late in life I might add, and I hate statistics to the depth, breadth, and volume of all the oceans of all the earth combined. This text has helped me more than any other. Even more, I love brownies. And the recipe is fabulous. Thanks.”

DO NOT GET TOO EXCITED ABOUT THIS BOOK!

I am a physician and i recently attempted to work with this book for a course - do not be fooled by the title!! the book is simplistic and user friendly in spirit, but, perhaps too much so. As you work forward, the text and computer applications become cumbersome and difficult and i found that the author could not anticipate what i, the student, needed to comprehend. I would suggest a more mature, realistic and better organized text - i still hate statistics after working with this text! md, new york city

    Learning Basic Statistics

I am one of those people who (thinks she) hates statistics. I had been struggling with statistical concepts all semester and stumbled upon this book yesterday (actually an older version of it) at the library while studying for the final exam I will take this week. All I can say is that I wish I had discovered it sooner. Things that made absolutely no sense to me before, are now very clear. I feel so much more confident about taking the exam this week. The book tells you what you need to know in a very basic way and is actually fun to read. I am going to suggest to the professor that she use it as a complement to the required textbooks or at least recommend it as elective reading for others like me who haven't taken a math class in many years and are apprehensive about statistics.

Great Book to get a basic understanding

As a doctoral student (who was an art major), I did not have a strong collegiate background in mathematics, so I turned to books like this one to supplement my stats courses. It was an invaluable asset in helping me gain a foundational understanding.

A simple introduction, PLUS SPSS software !!

This book comes with the student version of SPSS on CD. This student version is limited to sample size of 1500 subjects, but that is perfectly fine for anyone taking an SPSS course. Yes, the text is simplistic, but it does work, and is perfectly readable. As value for money, this book WITH its software is excellent.

    Finally, something great from KU!

As a graduate of the University of Missouri it pains me greatly to say anything nice about someone associated with the Univ of Kansas (for those not familiar with the Midwest think USC-UCLA, Michigan-Michigan State, Florida-Florida State). However, this book truly is a great guide to grasping the basic fundamentals of statistics. Over 15 years had passed since I had taken statistics so I really had zero foundation to build upon. Fortunately, this book got me up to speed very quickly (necessary for a new job managing people who do this stuff for a living) and the chapters do build upon one another in a way that you can maintain a grasp of the big picture as you drill down on the individual chapters. I know it cost more than some of the "dummy" books but content and read are way superior.
