Statistics for Veterinary and Animal Science Third Edition is an introductory text which assumes no previous knowledge of statistics. It starts with very basic methodology and builds on it to encompass some of the more advanced techniques that are currently used. Carrying out statistical procedures and interpreting the results is an integral part of veterinary and animal science. This is the only book on statistics that is specifically written for veterinary science and animal science students, researchers and practitioners.
Description: This new edition of a statistics text has several additional features not present in the original, including expanded sections on regression analysis and a CD that contains the data sets used for demonstrative purposes in the book. The previous edition was published in 1999.
Purpose: As clearly stated in the preface, the authors' objective is to provide an introductory statistics text, including basic concepts appropriate for "the complete novice in statistics." The authors have succeeded admirably in this objective. There is a minimum of mathematical content, but sufficient for readers to appreciate the theoretical bases of the statistical tests presented.
Audience: The book has been developed by two experts in statistical analyses of biomedical data and statistical education. In this respect, the book is specifically written for veterinary and animal science students, and should also be useful for practitioners who require a user friendly statistics reference to support coverage of current scientific literature and clinical reports.
Features: The new edition contains 15 chapters that address basic aspects of statistics and distributions (chapters 1 to 4), experimental design and clinical trials (chapters 5 and 13), hypothesis testing (chapters 6 to 9), linear correlation, regression survival, and multivariate analysis (chapters 10, 11 and 14), and non-parametric methods (chapter 12). Of particular note, a chapter focused on the statistical aspects of evidence-based medicine (chapter 15) is a timely addition. A glossary of statistical terms and a series of flow charts for deciding upon appropriate statistical tests are included as appendixes. Each chapter begins with a concise list of learning objectives and ends with a series of exercises designed to develop familiarity with the statistical concepts or operations covered in each section. These learning exercises are supported by an accompanying CD that contains the data sets used in the text in four commonly used statistical formats (ASCII, Excel, SPSS and Stata). This book will serve as an excellent means for developing a working competency with these programs while also developing a theoretical understanding of statistical analyses. The topic of power calculations is covered, but this issue would have benefited from more detail, since prospective power assessment is a critical aspect of experimental design and is often ignored or poorly handled in grants submissions.
Assessment: This second edition will provide an excellent resource for both veterinary and animal science students and for clinical practitioners requiring an easy to use reference for statistical methods and analysis.
