From The Critics
The ninth edition of this introductory text/CD-ROM offers a greater variety of levels of difficulty in exercises, an expanded discussion of multicolinearity, introductory material on distribution-free tests, and revised printouts from statistical software that reflect the latest versions. The text emphasizes inference, with extensive coverage of data collection and analysis, and stresses the development of statistical thinking and the assessment of the credibility and value of the interference made from data. A mathematical background of basic algebra is assumed. McClave works in the private sector. Sincich is affiliated with the University of South Florida. Annotation c. A book/disk introductory text emphasizing inference, with extensive coverage of data collection and analysis. Special attention is paid to the development of statistical thinking, and assessment of credibility and value of inferences made from data. All new ideas are illustrated with real data-based applications and examples. Pedagogical aids include real data exercises of three different types, chapter reviews, key terms and formulas, pronunciation notes, and student projects. Instructors can control the level of coverage of probability with separate optional sections. Assumes a background of basic algebra. Introduction
STATISTICS IN THE NEW MILLENIUM
This ninth edition of Statistics is an introductory text emphasizing inference, with extensive coverage of data collection and analysis as needed to evaluate the reported results of statistical studies and make good decisions. As in earlier editions, the text stresses the development of statistical thinking and the assessment of credibility and value of the inferences made from data, by both those who consume and those who produce them. It assumes a mathematical background of basic algebra.
A briefer version of the book, A First Course in Statistics, is available for single semester courses that include minimal coverage of regression analysis, analysis of variance, and categorical data analysis.

TRADITIONAL STRENGTHS
We have maintained the pedagogical features of Statistics that we believe make it unique among introductory statistics texts. These features, which assist the student in achieving an overview of statistics and an understanding of its relevance in the social and life sciences, business, and everyday life, are as follows:
FLEXIBILITY IN COVERAGE
The text is written to allow the instructor flexibility in the coverage of topics through "optional" sections in relevant chapters and occasional footnotes. Suggestions for covering two topics, probability and regression, follow.
