Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
Gulling, a registered pharmacist and adjunct professor of finance, approached educator/writer Pattie Vargas and Consumer Health Information Research Institute director John Renner to help create a guide that would ``give consumers accurate information on how to stay healthy; show them how to shop for health care services that are cost effective and medically sound; teach them how to avoid frauds and phonies; and communicate all these things in easy-to-read-and-understand laymen's language.'' They succeeded admirably. The book is divided into three parts: the first takes the ``ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'' approach in advocating good nutrition, safety, and health education. The second section covers cost-saving strategies when dealing with the healthcare system. And the last section, ``Getting the Bills Paid,'' contains excellent chapters on insurance, Medicare, taxes, and, briefly, terminal care. Recommended for all consumer health collections.-- Anne C. Tomlin, Auburn Memorial Hosp. Lib., N.Y.
