Overview

The idea of “working with the dead”- of maintaining, continuing, and enhancing our relationships with those who have died-was a fundamental part of Rudolf Steiner’s work. This volume collects an enormously rich harvest of Steiner’s thoughts on this subject gathered over many years.Steiner speaks directly out of his own experience, formulating meditation practices and verses that have worked for him. We learn of the usefulness of reading to the dead, of using verbs (not nouns) when we talk with them, of the importance of sacred moments of falling asleep and awakening for posing questions and receiving answers, of the way in which our memories of the dead are like “art” for them, of key moods we must cultivate: community with the world, gratitude, confidence in the current of life. We learn, too, of the many ways discarnate souls can help us in our work on earth, and of the many ways we likewise can help them. In addition, many of the mantras Steiner gave to help his students enter into connection with their dead are also given. This important volume will be of help to anyone who wishes to deepen their relationship to the living or those who have died or to the cosmic, spiritual environment.AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY: Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) became a respected and well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, particularly known for his work on Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his earlier philosophical principles into an approach to methodical research of psychological and spiritual phenomena. His multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, philosophy, religion, education (Waldorf schools), special education (the Camphill movement), economics, agriculture (biodynamics), science, architecture, and the arts (drama, speech and eurythmy). In 1924 he founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which has branches throughout the world.
