Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beth-Anne White
Preventing fire is the best way to stay safe around fire and that is what Luciaa Raatma promotes to readers as she spends the first few chapters explaining how to prevent fire and be safe around things that cause fire. While no one wants to ever deal with having a fire, Raatma also spends time teaching about what to do in an emergency involving fire. All ages can benefit from reviewing these safety tips. Teachers and parents will be glad to incorporate Staying Safe around Fire into their classrooms and houses. This is a great example of nonfiction literature that will guide students to understanding how to read nonfiction. The layout of the book begins with a table of contents, includes a glossary, hands-on activities, and other book and internet sources about this topic. There is also an index for readers to be guided back to key words throughout the book. Occasionally there are bolded words and lower on the page there will be a definition of the word. Each spread has bright, colorful photographs of real people that will engage children and adults alike. Staying Safe around Fire is part of the "Staying Safe" series. Raatma is very thorough without being tedious or long winded. The other books are written in a similar fashion and parents and teachers will enjoy sharing these with early readers.
