Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beth-Anne White
Strangers are everywhere and children need to be informed about how to deal with them. Lucia Raatma tackles a very important topic. Raatma shares how there are safe strangers and unsafe strangers—and how children can tell the difference. This book empowers children to stand up for themselves and keep themselves safe—even in a potentially unsafe situation. Teachers and parents will be glad to incorporate Staying Safe around Strangers into their classrooms and houses. This is a great example of nonfiction literature that will guide students to understanding how to read nonfiction. The layout of the book begins with a table of contents and ends with a glossary, hands-on activities, and other book and internet sources on this topic. There is also an index for readers to be guided back to key words throughout the book. Occasionally there are bolded words and lower on the page there will be a definition of the word. Each spread has bright, colorful photographs of real people that will engage children and adults alike. Staying Safe around Strangers is part of the "Staying Safe" series. Raatma is very thorough without being tedious or long winded. The other books are written in a similar fashion and parents and teachers will enjoy sharing these with early readers.
