Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beth-Anne White
Students encounter school buses whether or not they themselves ride in one. Lucia Raatma takes school bus safety step-by-step and allows readers to know what happens on a school bus and how to best stay safe. Teachers and parents will be glad to incorporate Staying Safe on the School Bus into their classrooms and houses. This is a great example of nonfiction literature that will guide students to understanding how to read nonfiction. The layout of the book begins with a table of contents, and includes a glossary, hands-on activities, and other book and internet sources about this topic. There is also an index for readers to be guided back to key words throughout the book. Occasionally there are bolded words and lower on the page there will be a definition of the word. Each spread has bright, colorful photographs of real people that will engage children and adults alike. Staying Safe on the School Bus is part of the "Staying Safe" series. Raatma is very thorough without being tedious or long winded. The other books are written in a similar fashion and parents and teachers will enjoy sharing these with early readers. K-Gr 2—.These books do a wonderful job of discussing in developmentally appropriate ways issues pertinent to young children. Chapter spreads include a full-page, full-color photograph and a few sentences in large type. Throughout the series, the major emphasis is on the importance of trusted adults. The thoughtful tips are all manageable and great for building confidence. Each title includes definitions and an activity.
