Gr 8 Up-While an up-to-date book for teens on healthy living and lifestyle choices is always welcome, this is a standard series entry. The volume covers chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, HIV AIDS, and genital warts. Symptoms and medical descriptions are straightforward and easy to understand, and healthy lifestyle choices are encouraged. The chapter on herpes contains a list of alternative treatments that might be helpful for some sufferers. Stories of teens and couples dealing with STDs appear throughout. The volume is well organized and covers the subject adequately. However, the design is almost textbook-like with black-and-white drawings of the male and female reproductive systems and gray fact boxes. The short tests to determine the "facts or fiction" of readers' knowledge of or risk of contracting STDs are useful. While report writers will use the book, browsers or casual inquirers may gravitate to more interesting presentations.-Jane Halsall, McHenry Public Library District, IL Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
