Admiral John “Black Jack” Geary and the crew of Dauntless have safely escorted important alien representatives to Earth. But before they can depart for home, two of Geary’s key lieutenants vanish. The search for his missing men leads Geary on a far-flung chase, ultimately ending at the one spot in space from which all humans have been banned: the moon Europa. Any ship that lands there must stay or be destroyed—leaving Geary to face the most profound moral dilemma of his life.

To make matters worse, strains on the Alliance are growing as the Syndics continue to meddle. Geary is ordered to take a small force to the border of Syndic space. But what he finds there is a danger much greater than anyone expected: a mysterious threat that could finally force the Alliance to its knees…

Black Jack is still kicking a$$ !!!!

Admiral John "Black Jack" Geary is featured in this latest "Lost Fleet" episode and this time, he goes into battle not with his trusty Flag Captain (and wife...) Tanya Desjani, commanding officer of the fleet flagship, the battlecruiser DAUNTLESS, but with another trusted officer and friend, Capt. Roberto Duellos, a peer of Tanya's, who also commands a battlecruiser. The story is a continuation of the previous book where Geary and Co. finish up a trip to the ancient homeworld of humanity, Earth. There is kidnapping, piracy and aliens which make for engaging space opera, but there is also orphans, political intrigue that adds a nice bit of spice to the whole book. It isn't just a "shoot ''em up" story but one with many interesting twists and turns. Now that I have finished, I look forward to more from Adm. Geary and his crew!!!

I have now read all of the books in the Lost Fleet Series. I really enjoy the the characters. They are not one dimensional. The stories revolve around the morality of honorable conduct during and after an interstellar war. My. Hemry writing as Jack Campbell has penned a series of fast paced books that leave you waiting for the next one. I recommend all books that he has written as Jack Campbell, because I have read and enjoyed them all. I eagerly await the next one.

    Sop opera at its worst

I slogged my way through the whole series only to give up here. The broken heart, Romeo and Julliet angst bs just totaly went over the top. He finally gets a night with his WIFE and befor they can finally say "I love you" without the world ending, ASSASSINS!! Is this Twilight: The insipid future???
Im done, wont read anymore of his crap again.

Would Recommend to followers of Black Jack.

Not a whole lot of fighting going on in this book. Deals more with the political environment of the Alliance. As this series continues, I can see that Black Jack and the leadership of the Alliance will clash. Their lack of ANY integrity or honor will force his hand, sooner or later. This was a good read, interesting to see the connection of old Earth and the Alliance. It seems that we drag the same old issues with us no matter where we might go in the universe. Still not sure where the Wolfspiders factor into this, I think they may be observing events with the humans as the develop and see Black Jack as a key figure.

    Emotionaly redundant and predictably boring

Space darma/ conspiracy/ cilffhanger. Repeat with bland character building.

    Good - not great

Good placeholder in the series, defines the new external threat and continues to mine the existing internal threats. Pays attention to logistics in a realistic manner at the ship, fleet, departmental and political levels. Waiting for the next book in this series.

Slow but steady to really good

At first the pace of this book almost caused me put it down but since I had read all the others, I gambled it would get better: it did.

Once the writer finished the slow story setup, the pace quickened and brought forth the Jack Campbell I have come to enjoy reading.

I look forward to the next book in this series and wish the writer all the best.

    Meh

Not up to the quality I have come to see in this series in the past. Felt like the author just wanted a space filler so put some fluff together and sold it.
