    odd printing error

While I did enjoy reading what I could of the book, the printing company screwed up big time. I'm not sure how many copies are affected, but in mine pp. 229-276 are printed TWICE and and pp 277-324 are missing completely, like they were never there to begin with. I would have given it 5 stars if not for that problem. Other than that, I highly recomend it even though it is somewhat dated.

    More Fluff than Stuff

I'm sorry, but I couldn't recommend this book to anyone. It just contains to much, (while definetly well meant), fluff. There are pages and pages dedicated to exposing 'hate group' web pages. While I agree with the author's views on all matters covered, really, what is it doing here. Just a whole lot of information for the total beginner, like rip-off schemes. Too much coverage of same schemes used long before proliferation of internet users. About only 2 chapters worth of useful information, and some of that is either intentionally, or unintentionally 'lite' on content. Otherwise well written, and well intentioned, but mostly suitable for the most uninformed novice. Great CD though, full of goody's to play with, but you'll want to check for updates.

    GET THIS BOOK

This is just a book that was worth every cent. The amount of info in this book is a steal. Everyone should buy this book, technical or not. If you have ever used a computer period, get this book. Help yourselves by finding out about what is out on the internet and computers. Protect yourselves better with the wealth of info and be more resource full. I found things in this book that I have been looking for for months and things I realize could make my life easier. I recommend this book to every tech I work with and every non tech. Even non technical people got intranced by the book. I read the whole book in 1 day easy and still review it everyday when I am looking for stuff.

    This is real reading!

This is the definative book on the world of hacking. I have not been able to put this book down since I've bought it. Purchase this book asap because it took me three weeks to get it. The CD-Rom is a real bonus because you can use the files on them to put a secure 'lock-down' on your personal computer.

Great guide to protecting yourself online

Borrowing from the title of the old 1960's Abbie Hoffman book, Wang has put together an excellent guide to protecting yourself while on the 'net. This book is an excellent and quick read and is a fascinating look at some of the things about the 'net that some would prefer you didn't know about. Items like hackers, what they do, how they operate and the differences between 'good hackers' and 'bad hackers (ie 'crackers'). Wang also gives good information about viruses, what they are, how to build your own, and how to stop them from infecting your computer. I like his philosophy too. While some may be upset he is providing this kind of information (for examples, hackers and ISP tech support folk), I think it's important for anyone online to have access to this kind of information in order to better protect themselves from attacks by malicious hackers, or to be able to protect sensitive information on your computer. He states this in the book and he also points out that if you do try some of the things mentioned in the book (like 'stealing passwords' or 'harassing someone online'), you can be arrested for breaking the law. In addition, there are three appendices, one which is a glossary of 'Internet security terms,' another which shows screenshots of various hacker tools, and a thrid appendix which details all the various software (which includes virus scanners and firewalls) on the CD-ROM that comes with the book. If you want to know ways to secure yourself online or protect your computer from any kind of threat (online or offline), you definitely should buy this book.

    Steal This Computer Book!

By all means don't make the same mistake I made by actually paying for this book. It is very outdated, and if you know the slightest thing about computers it serves as a history lesson at best. Don't get me wrong if you just bought a computer and have never been on the net before this is a great book to have, otherwise your better of getting a years subscription to 2600.
