Stealing of a Nation [Bonus CD]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague

On this, their third album, they connect with the pelvic region more successfully than ever, thanks in large part to their expansion from trio to quintet. The added elements sneak in subtly but palpably -- as on the minimalist piano tinkle that cleaves the Gang of Four–styled "Party Crashers" or the rhythmic counterpoint that drives "Transmission." Producer Max Heyes Primal Scream, Doves polishes the band's punk-disco, which had been scuffed up by the DFA on their previous disc, Gotham!. ...

Subsequently, despite the added sonics, the tenor of the disc is more atmospheric. The shadowy "FRA Type I and II" floats along on widely spaced waves of ping-ponging electronics, while "Nation" is steeped in dub-reggae effects. The latter song is the most potent of a slew of politically charged tunes, on which Anthony Roman takes on political frauds and corporate weasels see "Shake the Foundation" and "Give Me All Your Money", as well as those who shrug off their wrongdoing "No Reaction". The heaviness is balanced, however, by an unflagging sense that solutions are within reach -- as Roman sings on "Nation," "Do your life justice, it won't take long."
