"Young children will enjoy a vibrant, fun ride on the rails."—The Missourian
Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
An assortment of colors is shown through illustrations of various cars on trains running down a railroad track in this sturdy board book. It begins with a page of purple across from a purple engine on the other side of a two-page spread. The word, “Purple” is written in large letters, followed by a two-line verse that tells about the engine. The word, “Engine,” is written at the bottom of the page. This continues with a tender car for the color gray, a well car for orange, a boxcar for pink, a tanker car for blue, a reefer car for white, a flatbed car for brown, another well car for green, a crane car for yellow, and a caboose car for red. Each illustration contains an animal, such as the elephant that is sleeping on the coals on the tender car and a lion reading a book while sitting on the well car. The pages with the name of the color are shown in that color, and the car that accompanies it on the opposite page is also in that color. The illustrations are simple but have enough detail in their shapes that young children should be able to recognize the differences in the various types of cars. A brown flatbed moves a dinosaur, and a yellow crane car has a crane (the bird) working at picking up a bone with the car crane. This book is part of the “Steam Train, Dream Train” series. It is an educational and interesting book that should be practical and fun for very young children. Reviewer: Vicki Foote; Ages 2 to 4.
