Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD MD(Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)
Description: This is the fifth edition of a compilation of terms used in pathology and laboratory medicine practice. The previous edition was published in 2005.
Purpose: It is intended as a handy reference for words used in these fields.
Audience: Although written primarily for medical transcriptionists, this book would also be useful for other folks whose daily jobs entail transcribing pathology or laboratory medicine words (e.g., lab assistants, clinical laboratory scientists, clerks in outpatient phlebotomy stations, etc.). Stedman's has a solid reputation as an excellent authority on medical terminology through the various books published under this name. This one nicely upholds this tradition of excellence.
Features: This 1,300-page book is one big alphabetical listing of words — no definitions. This is helpful for transcriptionists or laboratory/pathology workers needing to transcribe handwritten or dictated information. This edition contains updated words related to bioterrorism and molecular and cellular related terms. In addition, there is an entire appendix-like section devoted just to laboratory tests (names, units of measure, reference intervals). There are other appendixes describing how to transcribe various disease classifications depicting clinical conditions, and listing microorganisms, histological stains or fixatives, and toxicological tests. Although you'd think this book would be pretty complete with its 1,300 pages, I was surprised to see that BI-RADS was not included in either the words listing section or the appendix containing disease classification and staging — a surprising omission considering how commonly BI-RADS is used for breast cancer imaging interpretations. The other minor gripe I have is that this is a paperback book, and a thick one, too. Given the frequent use it will get, the expected wear and tear means its covers will get ripped off quickly, followed closely by the pages on either end of the book.
Assessment: This is a great book to have handy at any location where transcription of pathology or laboratory medicine terms is needed. I'm placing my copies at the histology bench and the clinical laboratory "send out" bench.
