IF YOU HAVEN’T READ RED QUEEN, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO SO BEFORE READING STEEL SCARS AND THIS REVIEW. Steel Scars is the second novella in the Red Queen series. It takes place right before and at the beginning of Red Queen. This novella is also told in the POV of a secondary character. This time it’s Farley’s turn to tell readers her story. Farley (code name: Lamb) is a captain in the Scarlet Guard, a group of revolutionaries fighting for the equality of Reds. Readers get a glimpse into Farley’s past and her complicated relationship with her father, who is a colonel with the Scarlet Guard. The Scarlet Guard is trying to extend the revolution into Norta. This story is written both in Farley’s POV and with decoded messages between Lamb, Ram, and Drummer while Farley is setting up contacts for their mission. During her mission, she decides to go against orders and follow her instincts, which proves to be good. My favorite part about this novella was getting to finally meet Shade Barrow, Mare’s older brother. I found myself wanting to know more about him during Red Queen, View Spoiler ». Farley eventually initiates Shade into the Scarlet Guard and together the make a discover that could be the key to their revolution. Just like with Queen Song, I recommend reading Red Queen before you read Steel Scars.
