Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Stella is a mutt who can’t seem to make any dog friends. Deciding that she’ll have an easier time with pigs, she assumes a new identity—Princess Pig—and enrolls in Madame Cochon’s If Pigs Could Fly School of Dance, “because... a dance class is the perfect place to find friends. And, as everyone knows, pigs are the best dancers.” As expected, there are bumps along the way (“She jetés at lunch. She pliés at dinner. But practice doesn’t make perfect”), and eventually, Stella wins over everyone with her grit (“We always knew you weren’t a pig,” says Madame). Murphy, who collaborated with Peters on Broadway Barks, contributes illustrations that exude an authentic girly sweetness. Turning the pages to Peters’s spirited narration, which is provided in an accompanying CD, makes for a more rewarding reading experience. The story and disc end with a sneakily affecting self-esteem anthem, which, like the familiar tale itself, is buoyed by the author’s lovely vocals. (Peters donates all royalties to programs that promote the adoption of shelter animals.) Ages 4-up. (May)
Children's Literature
Stella calls herself the Princess Pig, although she is neither a pig nor a princess. She is actually a dog. Stella is not sure why she has no friends so she decides to take dancing lessons at Madame Cochon's dancing school; there, she hopes to make some friends. She takes a few tumbles during the practice; however, Madame Cochon encourages Stella to keep at it. Stella puts her energy into practicing in preparation for the upcoming dance recital. The story seems to lack some background information about why Stella is interested in being a princess and a pig. It is not clear why she feels the way she does, and this may make it difficult for readers to empathize with Stella. The illustrations fail to provide additional clues about Stella's personality. The book comes with a CD; children listening to the reading need to be ready with the first page because the reading begins immediately with the first line of text story. Peters reads the story and sings the song at the end of the story. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—Stella is a lonely pit bull who uses a crown and fake tail to masquerade as a pig princess in order to join a dance class and meet friends. Her classmates are skeptical about her porcine roots but are interrupted by elegant Madame Cochon, who drills the youngsters and Stella for an important recital. Stella's initial clumsiness disappears with her faithful practice of pirouettes, pliés, and jetés. When the show's star is injured, Madame selects her to perform the famous "32 perfect turns." Despite dreading the necessity of removing the crown she believes hides her identity, Stella is a grand success on stage, and she learns that everyone knew all along she was neither a princess nor a pig. The final page has lyrics for a "follow your dream" song. Peters reads the story and sings the song on the accompanying CD. Murphy's paintings with collage provide all the ideals of ballet, from frothy tutus to embroidered bodices, and her animals' expressions are priceless. Her upright pigs in leotards are graceful and Madame's stern expressions are flawless. Although the concluding song's lyrics are cumbersome and on the verge of saccharine, this story will please ballet fans, and any little girls who have felt left out.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA

Adorable Book with a Good Lesson

My 5 year old daughter loves this book. It holds her interest plus provides a good lesson on the importance of being yourself. It also comes with a bonus CD. We actually played it in the car and listened to the story and their is a song at the end. Even my 1 year old son seemed to enjoy it a lot.
