Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sally Ling, M.D.;FACP(University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine)
Description: This is a very well put together "notebook" containing essential information that medical students need to acquire during internal medicine rotations. It is presented in an appealing format that is effective for learning.
Purpose: The book was written to enable students to study more efficiently for their clerkships, shelf exams, and boards. It is intended to consolidate important information which otherwise may need to be extracted from multiple sources.
Audience: The authors envision students using this book beginning in their second year of medical school. It will be particularly helpful during third and fourth year internal medicine clerkships.
Features: All standard subspecialty areas with the exception of psychiatry and women's health are covered. Important clinical points are highlighted in the margins. Tables, illustrations, and clinical vignettes are effectively used.
Assessment: This well edited "notebook" concisely provides pertinent and reliable information on internal medicine related topics. It will be extremely useful during internal medicine clerkships, as well as for preparation for the shelf exam and boards.

    Step-up to Internal Medicine

If you buy this book early in your rotation or 3rd year, it's golden. Key is to give yourself time to go over it. For taking practice tests, looking up stuff on your patients, etc., what you need is in this book and I found it extremely helpful. But if you buy it late in your rotation and expect to cram and ace your shelf, this is not the book for cramming. The material is really well-presented here and the critical points are covered, and one of the strengths is the guidelines on how to manage conditions you see every day. It gives a very nice perspective on management options and complications but does so concisely without being verbose. Highly recommended if you give yourself time.

    Step-up to Internal Medicine

Very useful book. I use it for other rotations too, not just for medicine. A very nice synopsis of clinical medicine and I would get it as early as possible in 3rd year so you can refer to it on other rotations as well. For me this book has become during my clinical years what BRS pathology was during my basic science years. It's one of those books that comes around once in a while that just rocks. It's well-edited...I haven't found any errors. Highly recommend it. I hope this review helps.

    Step-up to Internal Medicine

This is a MUST BUY for medical students entering 3rd year. It tells you exactly what to need to know for every disease you¿ll need to learn for your 3rd year medicine rotation and family practice. It takes a very pragmatic approach, is well-written and packed with info. There are many xrays and clinical photos which are really helpful. Lots of great photos of derm conditions, and section on how to read xrays is outstanding. There is just the right amount of detail for you to read up on your patients but not so much that you drown and run out of time. One criticism I have is that the book covers certain conditions that are rather obscure¿like Von Hippel-Lindau disease for example. I suppose I could be pimped on that but it¿s probably okay if I don¿t know the answer. The great thing about this book is that it has no weak chapter. Most review books have a chapter or chapters that is not as good as the others. Sections like ambulatory medicine, dermatology and allergy make this useful in an outpatient and family practice setting too. These sections are not covered well in other review books. Another criticism is the clinical vignettes. They¿re great but need more of them. One recommendation for next edition is to add more clinical vignettes. Step up covers JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING you¿ll see on your medicine/FP rotations! It even covers IV lines, enteral/parenteral nutrition...there is even a section on erectile dysfunction! One more thing I have to complement is the use of margin boxes to emphasize important points. I used this book as my main source for medicine rotation and family practice and supplemented it with 2 question books and did really well. I highly recommend it to all medical students because it really is a great investment of your money.
