Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jessica L. Small, DO (Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine)
Description: This is the third edition of a concise but complete review of the pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of a wide variety of conditions commonly encountered in the practice of medicine and on exams taken by medical students.
Purpose: The authors, both practicing physicians, highlight key medical concepts with an appropriate amount of detail to improve the efficiency of reviewing material for those on their medicine clerkship. They provide ample practice questions for self-assessment.
Audience: It is intended for medical students who are preparing for medicine shelf exams or the USMLE step 2, and for those who are simply looking for a complete review of high-yield medicine topics.
Features: The book discusses the characteristics, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and general guidelines for making management decisions for a broad variety of tested pathology and diseases commonly encountered in the clinical setting. Organized using a systems-based approach, the book allows readers to focus on the diseases and pathophysiology specific to each organ system. It also incorporates major clinical trials, providing evidence-based medicine to inform readers in their clinical decision making. Full-color pictures and clinical images are used throughout the book, which ends with two types of self-assessment — over 100 patient management questions that improve the ability to think like a clinician and online access to 300 USMLE-style practice questions.
Assessment: "This book achieves its purpose, highlighting key medical concepts with an appropriate amount of detail and providing an efficient way to review medicine topics. It also provides patient management questions and USMLE-style questions with answers to assist self-assessment. Features new to the third edition include full-color pages with an updated page design, full-color clinical images to supplement topics, and new information on evidence-based medicine. These changes make the book more memorable and enjoyable. I highly recommend it for those looking for a complete review of internal medicine for clinical clerkships or shelf and board exam preparation, as well as for those who simply want a concise summary of information studied during clinical years of medical school. Good Book, the format is less than satisfactory

I am familiar with this book, have a hard copy, and recommend it, but wanted one for my nook. First, I did not read closely, and failed to note that this was for the Nook STUDY, not for the nook. It will not open on the nook at all, nor any of the tablets nor Galaxy Note 2 I own. It will open on my laptop (with the nook study software installed), which is possesses a decent i5 processor, and 8 gigs of ram. Using the nook study program, paging through this book is terribly slow. Taking up to 2 seconds to turn a page. The font sizing gives you control of body text, but not of diagrams nor call out boxes that these books are full of (you have to page zoom). Trying to use the highlight tool is even slower. Simply frustrating to use. I will stick to the hard copy version. Good bye $50.

    I Also Recommend:

    Highly Recommended for medical students

This is a classic book, now in its third edition, that is meant as a study guide or study aid for medical students in their internal medicine clerkship. As a physician, this was my first clerkship in third year, and found books like this one very helpful in trying to remember the important points of such a huge subject. Many students also use this book to help study for their USMLE's.

I also recommend two must reads for medical students. Dr. Samuel Shem's "House of God" is a classic novel about life as an intern in an inner city hospital. Dr. Anthony Youn's "In Stitches" is one of my favorites, a truly entertaining memoir about becoming a doctor. It's full of laughs and even some tears.
