Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-Clear and engaging biographies of two Texas heroes. Austin recounts the relatively short life of the man who took over his father's plan to begin a colony in what was then part of Mexico and lived to see Texas become its own republic. Houston profiles the colorful life of the only man to serve as governor of two states, and best known for winning the war for Texas independence, advocating for Native Americans with the U.S. government, and opposing the state's secession from the Union. Sidebars add facts, define terms, and spotlight particular individuals. The good-quality illustrations are almost all reproductions of period paintings, maps, and documents. It's unfortunate that there are no contemporary maps to help identify places mentioned in the texts. A glossary defines difficult words but these terms are not highlighted in the text, so kids won't know that they're there. Solid sources for reports.-Sally Bates Goodroe, formerly at Harris County Public Library, Houston, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
