Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In an easy to read style, with factual and cartoon style illustrations, Venezia introduces one of the of world's greatest scientists, Stephen Hawking, a physicist. His specialty is theoretical physics and his career has been spent explaining why and how the universe really works. Like some other brilliant scientists, school was a bit of a bore for him and he rarely had to study. He went to Oxford, but his real goal was to get a doctorate at Cambridge. Along the way, his life took an unexpected turn as it was discovered that he had a disease known as ALS which destroys the nerves that control the muscles. Before his real degeneration physically, he met and married Jane and together they had three children. He also has beaten the odds in terms of survival and continues to work on theories to explain black holes and a mathematical thesis to explain how the Big Bang could have happened. Though his mind is sharp and continuing to come up with new ideas, his body is failing and he uses a motorized chair and a speech synthesizer. His book, A Brief History of Time, was a bestseller and he has currently been writing a series of books with his daughter Lucy to help younger readers understand his theories and findings. The closing page contains a glossary of the bolded words in the text and an index. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
