Overview

Steroid use is not just a problem for professional sports stars. Studies show that teenagers-especially boys-are using steroids in high school to change their bodies' strength and appearance. As is true of the use of many addictive, illegal drugs, steroid use at a young age comes with a long list of worrisome side effects, including heart irregularities, cancer, and serious emotional problems. Steroids and Other Performance-Enhancing Drugs explores the facts and science behind steroid use, as well as efforts to keep the problem under control, particularly among professional sports stars and young people.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
Skip the introduction and get into the heart of the book. You will learn that steroids, as used in this book, "are human made drugs that make muscles grow bigger and faster" sometimes with tragic consequences. Be prepared for the true and tragic stories of Taylor Hooton, Robert Hazelton, and Lyle Alzads. Approximately one million people in the United States use illegal steroids, so what is so bad? Well, their use causes psychological problems as well as heart attacks, strokes, liver tumors, cancer, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. The interesting yet sad history of the drugs is detailed. I would imagine that not many teens have read about the castration of would-be male singers centuries ago or about how steroids have found their way into our food chain, but they will learn about them here. There are laws against steroid use, but they vary widely around the world. Olympic records abound in steroid use. Even though most professional sport associations ban steroid use, it is rampant with drugs such Equipose and Tetrahydrogesterinone. There are legal steroids for medical uses, which can be godsends to those who need them, but there seems to be a way for anything good to be misused. The book ends with how to quit the use of steroids as well as signals of use to be aware of and resources for help. This book should be available in school and public libraries as well as health classes for young people to read. It is part of the "Junior Drug Awareness" series. Reviewer: RevaBeth Russell
