Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Steve Irwin became famous as the daring "Crocodile Hunter" of television fame, but well before Irwin started his media career, he was a member of a family that stressed conservation. In this illustrated biography, readers are introduced to the man behind the television star mythology who died prematurely while filming wildlife footage. This short biography is part of a series titled "Remarkable People." Designed to provide high interest biographies, this series is appropriate for either younger readers or students requiring a controlled vocabulary. While this is a worthwhile goal, the text resulting from this construction is rather superficial and wanting in any depth. This shortcoming is unfortunate, as the main character in this book was so full of bravura that a more comprehensive look at him would have been appealing. As it is, readers will come away from this biographical sketch with little information and only a glimpse of a naturalist whose impact on young viewers was pronounced. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
