Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
It is difficult for today's young readers to imagine a time when personal computers were not widely accessible. This volume of the "Getting to Know the World's Greatest Inventors and Scientists" series presents an overview of the history of computers and the significant roles Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak played in bringing computers to the public. When Jobs and Wozniak were growing up, computers were enormous machines that would often fill an entire room. They were used mainly by the government, banks, and other large corporations. Growing up in Silicone Valley, Wozniak's engineer father taught him about electronics. Woz liked to make gadgets and even built a simple computer. Jobs, who also grew up in Silicone Valley, was always asking questions of his neighbors, many of whom were electronic engineers. After Jobs and Woz met and bonded over their common interest in electronics, they started the Apple company to sell small, affordable computers. Jobs and Woz began their company when hardly anyone knew what a computer was. In 1977, they created the first successful personal computer. Though Woz left Apple in 1985, he kept inventing, founded museums and art centers, and organized school computer labs. Jobs, too, left Apple, only to later return and create products like the iMac, iPod, iTunes, and the iPhone. Each volume of the series includes photographs, maps, whimsical illustrations, a glossary and an index. Though the book appears slight, the conversational tone makes for an engaging and surprisingly informative read. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor
