Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner
Sure, you have seen Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T., but did you know Jaws was so disaster-laden the crew nicknamed it Flaws? Or that anti-venom was kept on the set of Raiders because some among the 9,000 snakes truly were poisonous? Or that E.T. was conceived out of Steven Spielberg's loneliness during the Raiders shoot? These and many other anecdotes and insights into the man and his work make this entry in the "People We Know Today" series an outstanding read. Born in 1946, even as a child he stood out. Fearful yet resourceful, Spielberg controlled his fears by terrorizing his three younger sisters. He did this with such creativity that his mother said his badness was so original there were not even books to tell you what to do. Throughout his youth, Spielberg (a Jewish, unathletic, mediocre student) felt like an outcast, but he became a different person behind the camera. In addition to covering the background and varying successes of all 25 films Spielberg has directed to date, the author also includes his proudest achievements: The Shoah Foundation, which houses the stories of 52,000 Holocaust survivors in 32 languages, and The Righteous Persons Foundation, which finds projects to strengthen Jewish life in the U.S. and worldwide through exchanges with other cultures. An amazing talent (many consider him the greatest storyteller of our time) and a remarkable role model to boot, Spielberg is a fascinating person. This biography does him justice.
