Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jill K. Woodward
Katie Woo has no idea how to write a research paper for school. After talking to her friends and parents, she brainstorms ideas until she decides to write about butterflies. Thinking about them, she begins to make a list of questions to answer, and soon she is well on her way to writing a research paper. A delightful mix of nonfiction tips in the sidebars and the fictional story of the likeable Katie Woo makes this otherwise dry and tedious topic entertaining and accessible. Includes a glossary, a section for further reading on how to write a report, and a list of Internet sites for more information related to the topic. A website is also provided for readers who wish to follow the character Katie Woo on her other adventures or to download Katie-themed activity sheets and stationery. Elementary schoolchildren will find this a useful supplement when presented with the daunting task of writing a research paper. This book is also available as an E-book in PDF format. K-Gr 2—In this energetic series, a young girl learns about many different kinds of writing. Her friends and family make appearances as she keeps a journal, writes poems, pens letters, and more. Watercolor illustrations capture Katie's personality and give life to the stories. The titles look and read like easy readers. "Katie's Star Tip" sidebars complement the narratives by delivering advice about the kind of writing being highlighted. For example, Facts tells readers, "Brainstorming can help you pick a topic." The end of each book offers activity suggestions for budding writers, such as journal prompts, ideas for research papers, topics for opinion pieces, and suggestions of people to write letters to, such as grandparents. Website addresses lead readers and educators to more information and "downloadables."

Meet the Author

Fran Manushkin is the author of many popular picture books, including Baby, Come Out!; Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story; The Tushy Book; The Belly Book; and Big Girl Panties. There is a real Katie Woo — she's Fran's great-niece — but she never gets in half the trouble of the Katie Woo in the books. Fran writes on her beloved Mac computerin New York City, without the help of her two naughty cats, Chaim and Goldy.

Tammie Lyon began her love for drawing at a young age while sitting at the kitchen table with her dad. She continued her love of art and eventually attended The Columbus College of Art and Design, where she earned a Bachelors degree in Fine Art. After a brief career as a professional ballet dancer, she decided to devote herself full time to illustration. Today she lives with her husband, Lee, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her dogs, Gus and Dudley, keep her company as she works in her studio.
