Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
A self-help guide to positive thinking, high self-esteem, and responsible personal power. Based on a program originally developed for adults, the book's premise is that all young people can and should be taught the skills necessary to face common issues, such as making choices, liking themselves, and solving problems. Exercises guide readers through learning about their own feelings, dreams, and needs--while stressing that they are responsible for their own behavior and happiness. Written in manual form, Stick Up For Yourself is similar in format to the many adult titles of the same genre. Situational anecdotes used to enhance the discussion are age appropriate and relevant to children. Of particular value are the ``Getting Personal'' sections that encourage writing and keeping a journal, which makes the guide more interactive and meaningful. The highly motivated will use this book independently, but it will be most effective within the classroom, family, or guidance group. --Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Pub . Schools, VA

    I Also Recommend:

Learn about yourself, your feelings, and what it REALLY means to stick up for yourself!

I never EVER knew what it meant to stick up for yourself. I always thought it meant making a situation fair for you by getting back at someone, or talking back. But it's actually about taking responsibility without blaming others, knowing that only you are responsible for the way you feel and anyone else, and that someone is always on your side-you.
What I like most about this book is that it has writing activities about your feelings. For instance, "write about a time you felt joyful" and at first I was thinking "How does this help me?!" but when you look back on your entries, you learn about yourself. It's almost like a diary sorta, but it helps you better understand your feelings. There are also the lessons about how to control your feelings-such as rage. I learned how rage is not the same as anger. Since it is a stronger feeling, it is much harder to control. This lesson hasn't helped me yet (and I experience rage a lot) it takes practice to learn to think before you speak, to think about the consequences first, and to use the techniques provided in this book to help you lose the feeling of rage to feel better.
I LOVED the positive self-esteem quiz! Very helpful! It helps you find out how much self-esteem you have. It will also help a little with getting your self-esteem up if it's low. I like how you become active with this book with having to keep your own journal, so it's not some boring read where you will just read the text and have to understand. The writing activities help you learn about yourself, feelings, how to control strong feelings, and the self-esteem section helps build positive self-esteem.
The self-esteem section is pretty short. It's pages 91-107 which isn't much! And this is why I gave it one star. However, it is very clear on what to do when you self-esteem is low. This section gives you 6 things to do each day to get it up and the self-esteem do's and dont's as well as the definition of self-esteem.
This is very helpful for any kid who can't really talk to their parents about these things because they might not feel comfortable talking about feelings and saying they don't really know themselves. And this book really wants you to talk to your parents about certain things and helps you.
I'm actually a teen, not 10 or 12. Even though this book was meant for kids a little younger than I am, I still found it very helpful since I've never had help controlling my rage or getting my self-esteem up when I'm down. This book is a MUST for all kids around 9 or 15! It's easy to understand, easy to learn, and easy to apply what you have learned to your daily life with the help of this awesome book! This is the perfect book for every kid. Even if the kid you give it to does not enjoy reading, they will feel down at some time and don't feel like opening up to his or her parents and this book will be waiting to guide them. You can't go wrong with this book-really!
So I give this a 4/5 stars, -1 star because of the small section on positive self-esteem but other than that, GREAT! I'm so happy I bought this :)
