You may write me down in history
With your bitter,
twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust,
I'll rise.

To say that Maya Angelou is just a poet would be too simplistic. Her poetry along with her autobiographies are powerful, poignant, dramatic and thought provoking. To say that this specific book is just a picture book would be an understatement! The poem Still I Rise is a strong, sassy and deep story in poetry form. What makes this specific version of the poem Still I Rise even more powerful are the paintings and illustrations by Diego Rivera. When one can add a picture to a verse of the poem, it makes it come even more alive. You not only have imagery through the writing, but actual images. Rivera's art in itself is moving and beautiful, so when you put two fantastic, talented people together, it's wonderful. I use this in my classroom and this publication brings to life Angelou's poem! I love this book!
