Overview

This title focuses on visually satisfying compositions in which the main elements are flowers, fruit and vegetable arrangements, and even arrangements of abstract geometric shapes. Both examples of famous paintings and step-by-step examples of works in progress are included among this book's hundreds of color illustrations. Reproductions of memorable still lifes include works by Chardin, C©zanne, Mir³, and many others. Instruction is presented on a level that will suit the needs of intermediate-level students, but many ambitious beginners have also profited from these books. Each title explains the fundamentals of painting and drawing in a given genre or style, and presents sample projects that can guide students toward professional-looking results.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Using examples from such artists as Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, and Paul Cezanne, each volume in this series focuses on painting or drawing in a specific style or genre. Theory flows directly into application so that effects may be understood and then replicated. Still Life focuses on the composition of inanimate objects, such as vegetables, fruits, flowers, and found objects. Early chapters highlight larger concepts, such as color choices, light sources, and point of view. Building on the theory base of these chapters, the focus shifts to direct application, using various subjects and media. Although directed toward intermediate to advanced artists, this series would be appropriate for more advanced beginners looking to broaden their knowledge and refine technique. Filled with beautiful illustrations and detailed text, this series will inspire any artist. (The Painter's Corner). Library Journal
The authors of these two compact volumes have intermediate and advanced artists in mind. Still Life, aimed primarily at the intermediate amateur, provides a good survey of still life, from its birth in the late 16th century with Caravaggio's Basket with Fruit. The lessons take the artist from flower, fruit, and vegetable arrangements to compositions of abstract geometric shapes. Familiar paintings by the masters and step-by-step examples of works in progress are illustrated. Even the psychological and emotional messages of still life are explored. This is an excellent introduction to the genre at the right price. Jones takes a sophisticated look at the rich, sensual medium of the classic style in oil. This award-winning, nationally exhibited artist shows how to achieve the same vibrant, jewel-like effects using modern materials. Transparent oils, alkyd paints, and reference photographs all help in making the look of the Dutch masters easier to achieve than it was during the Renaissance.
