Still Means War!

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
It's hard to believe that Christian music's first rock band has been around for 30 years now. Groundbreaking when they formed in 1972, Petra raised eyebrows (and a few hackles) with their brand of rock 'n' roll gospel way back when. Well, times have changed -- and it's largely thanks to these guys that we have a Christian music industry today. Still Means War!, named after the group's hit 1987 release, This Means War!, is a topical retrospective, collecting 14 of the group's best-known battle anthems. No wimpy offers of encouragement here; this is a hard-driving rock 'n' roll call to arms, full of hair-band vocals and a full-blown arena rock sound. Petra's message is that...

Petra's message is that wars may rage on the mean city streets or in countries far away, but the most important battle of all is the personal one each person wages against sin. Petra has 30 years' worth of material addressing that thought; among the highlights offered here are "Heart of a Hero," from the 1995 No Doubt release, 1987's "This Means War," and "Sleeping Giant" from 1993's Wake-Up Call. There's something a little charming about the big arena rock sound, but the motivational message is really what fires up this collection.
All Music Guide - Steven Douglas Losey
With 19 studio albums to their credit Christian rock stalwarts Petra continue to move and evolve over a 25 year career that spans two lead vocalists and hundreds of songs. Still Means War is the latest disc from the band. The release is a compilation that features songs of conquest and victory the band has performed throughout the years. Although pioneers in the movement, Petra has often sounded dated, especially in the upper registry of their vocalists. The first half of the disc falls into this category. There are some highlights sprinkled into the disc, however, that include the well-orchestrated "This Means War," and 1993's "Sleeping Giant," which still hold your attention. While the intent of the release is honorable its appeal will definitely be limited to the most ardent Petra fans. It has the feel of a compilation that was thrown together to appease the bands' fan base.
