Meet the Author

One of the founders of the Horror Writers Association, Robert R. McCammon (b. 1952) is one of the country’s most accomplished authors of modern horror and historical fiction. Raised by his grandparents in Birmingham, Alabama, McCammon published his first novel, the Revelations-inspired Baal, when he was only twenty-six. His writings continued in a supernatural vein throughout the 1980s, producing such bestselling titles as Swan Song, The Wolf’s Hour, and Stinger.  In 1991 Boy’s Life won the World Fantasy Award for best novel. After his next novel, Gone South, McCammon took a break from writing to spend more time with his family. He did not publish another novel until 2002’s Speaks the Nightbird. Since then he has followed “fixer” Matthew Corbett in two sequels, The Queen of Bedlam and Mister Slaughter. His newest novel is The Five. McCammon and his family continue to live in Birmingham.

The absoluuuuuute scariest book ever written:

I bought this book the second it went out on the shelves, and since then I have read it about 10 times. Everytime you read it, it gets better and better. Truely a thrill ride. I couldn't put the book down and read it in one day. Most definately the scariest book out there.

Loved McCammon's other books, but this one gets the booby prize

Loved McCammon's other books, but this one gets the booby prize . Main character is a repulsive jerk and loser throughout entire novel, then suddenly decides to save the world at the end... and defeats the extra-terrestial enemy with relative ease. Give me a break. It is fortunate I did not start reading McCammon's novels with this story, otherwise I would've missed a treasure trove of his other great books. Makes me wonder whether the other reviewers were reading the same "Stinger" book as me, because this one really sucked.

Awesome horror from one of the best

While this is a fairly old novel from mccammon it is one of his best next to swan song and the wolfs hour. Some may consider the first few chapters slow but keep reading. Its just building up to a literally explosive conclusion. Stinger iis probably one of the most horrifying literary monsters in a long time.

He got better with practice; this was practice

The first McCammon book I read was MINE and it got me hooked on McCammon. I worked through the public library's collection, with USHER's PASSING last; didn't think I'd like it but it was better than expected. I broke down and went to the bookstore (the cheapskate's last resort) and found STINGER. I didn't even finish it. The plotting is awkward and the action is mostly gore, comparable to Steven King's worst. I would recommend pretty much all the other McCammon stories, but this one stank, I'm sorry to say.

    more from this reviewer

    Another McCammon Winner!

What else can I say, this man can tell a tale. I am a sci-fi fan so that aspect of the book, along with the interesting and well-developed characters found in all of Mr. McCammon's books made this a natural read for me. Even if you don't usually enjoy sci-fi, check this book out, reading it will be a fun ride!

    Loved it!

This was one of the first books I read by this author years ago. I am a horror fan but wasn't sure about the alient thing, but decided to give it a try. This was a great combination of both. It is a fast and interesting read and I was glad to see it for the nook. Stinger runs a close 2nd to "Swan Song" by the same author.

    Excellent Book

This is the first book I read from this author back in high school. I've been hooked ever since! I have read just about all of his books! You can't go wrong with this one about an alien who arrives at this planet and must defend us from something much darker...

Very thrilling, but slow to develop.

This was, overall, a very enjoyable book. The villain is tremendously wicked and diabolical. Unfortunately, it takes about 200 pages to get him on stage. The problem is way too much character development as the author introduces the townspeople who, for the most part, are going to get slaughtered! Just too much time is spent setting up the town's issues, rivalries, and family dynamics before the bad guy shows. On the plus side, this was a very original and scary character at the time. I first read this in 1988, and just finished my second reading after finding it in a storage box. It held up, but the criticism remains.

    McCammon will sting you!

Wanna read a true science fiction creeper?! Try reading Robert McCammon's STINGER and you won't be sorry. This has got to be one of the author's most scariest works, one which will have you up late at night paying the high PG&E charges to insure the lights will remian on. There's a lot of gore in this dark novel but it's horror. Readers will enjoy learning about the creature called Stinger and will be wondering will it will pop up next. Without ruining any of the story, take my word for it; you'll appreciate this thriller. It's really too bad Rick retired, but thankfully, we have many great books by him. Come back Mr. McCammon! You're the best.

I have to say some of the most life-like characters I've ever see.

This is another feather in the cap of one of the greatest of the New York Times best selling author. I have this book since it first came out and Robert McCammon has created a town full of real and truly believable people and very imaginative extra-terestrials in literature.
