NASCAR is certainly a family sport; even young children can be seen at race tracks, cheering for their favorite drivers. Young race fans who are also new readers will be enthralled by the Rev It Up series. In particular, this picture book is formatted in such a way as to introduce young readers to the elements of both stock car racing and informational reading. There are photographs on one page and short four line text on the other. The text uses vocabulary associated with the sport, including a definition of just exactly what makes a race car a stock car. There are four chapters, glossary, resource lists and index in the table of contents, helping readers to see the difference between a story book and a nonfiction book. An internet resource will be especially helpful for teachers and parents in encouraging research into the sport and the cars. The chapters are consistent across the series, focusing on the definition, the history, the distinguishing parts and the general excitement the cars create for their fans. Like the sport itself, reading about the cars will be a family activity with the "Rev it Up" series. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson
