Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Rahmat M. Talukder, PhD, RPh (West Coast University School of Pharmacy)
Description: Healthcare professionals can use this abridged version of Stockley's Drug Interactions as a ready reference or guide to check drug interactions. The authors have used symbols to denote the severity of drug interactions instead of numbers. For example, an "X" refers to a severe or life threatening interaction that has been reported in the literature, and the use of the agent under such condition is contraindicated. The book presents more than 1,300 interaction monographs. The drugs are listed in their therapeutic classes in alphabetic order using International Nonproprietary Names, making it easy to find a drug.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide healthcare professionals with readily retrievable, clinically relevant drug interaction information. The objective, as stated, is sufficient to describe the importance of this book. This is a valuable tool for patient care that will be helpful to clinicians in avoiding potential drug interactions.
Audience: This is a handy reference for healthcare professionals. Students and residents may use it as a quick guide, but it should not be recommended for them.
Features: The drugs are arranged in the respective therapeutic group in alphabetic order by International Nonproprietary Names. Instead of interaction significance numbers, each monograph has been assigned a rating symbol to guide users. Drug interactions have been cross referenced, so the level of interaction between two drugs can be deciphered by checking either of the drugs. The symbols of significance of interaction are helpful. An "X" is the universally acceptable symbol for "No;" similarly, in the guide, "X" refers to a severe and life threatening interaction.
Assessment: The drugs are listed according to therapeutic class. However, antiepileptics are missing from the group list, although the drug interactions of the member drugs are available. Carbamazepine is a widely used drug, but it is missing from the index! Nowadays, electronic versions are preferable.
