Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Linda Marie MacMaster, PharmD (Temple University Health System)
Description: This is a quick and convenient reference for identifying clinically relevant drug interactions. It is organized in alphabetical order by International Nonproprietary Names which makes it extremely user friendly. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The goal is to provide healthcare professionals concise, accurate, and quick access to information regarding clinically relevant drug interactions, their severity, and management. These objectives are worthy and the book meets the author's objectives.
Audience: Intended for healthcare professionals, this most likely will be used by pharmacists, pharmacy students, physicians, medical residents, nurses, and any other healthcare professionals who need an easy access drug interaction resource. The information is based on over 1,500 drug monographs that were evaluated by practicing clinical pharmacists to assess the relevance and appropriateness of interactions. References are available only online at www.medicinescomplete.com, but users must register to access.
Features: The book sets out concise and accurate descriptions of clinically pertinent drug interactions and their severity and management options. Each interaction is accompanied by one of four symbols indicating either life-threatening interaction/contraindication; concurrent use may lead to significant hazard to the patient; doubtful interactions; and clinically insignificant interactions or no interaction. The book also details drug interactions with herbals, dietary supplements, and food. The index is especially helpful, allowing users to look up all the interactions covered in the book associated with one particular drug. The book is not all-inclusive and, generally speaking, it does not cover interactions involving anesthesia, combination antiretroviral regimens, and multiple IV antineoplastics. However, these limitations are to be expected since the book is designed to be a concise and easy-to-use small pocket reference.
Assessment: This book achieves its objectives of serving as a quick, easy, accurate pocket resource for significant drug interactions. The 2009 edition of the pocket companion is justified by the addition of 200 new monographs.
