Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David B. Glick, MD, MBA (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: Like its previous editions (most recent in 2008), this book describes many of the medical conditions that can affect the perioperative management of surgical patients, summarizes standard therapy for surgical comorbidities, and details the implications for anesthetic care.
Purpose: The authors' stated purpose is to give "a concise description of the pathophysiology of disease states and their medical management that is relevant to the care of the patient in the perioperative period." This important objective is met by the contributors, drawn mostly from the department of anesthesia at the Yale University School of Medicine.
Audience: Read cover-to-cover, this book would be an excellent resource for trainees for boards review. It also would be a useful reference for anesthesia practitioners preparing to take care of a patient with a medical disease that they do not encounter regularly.
Features: The book covers medical comorbidities in a system-based fashion, with each chapter devoted to a separate bodily system (e.g., vascular disease, spinal cord disorders, and diseases related to immune system dysfunction). While all the chapters are well written, the chapters on the less common problems (e.g., diseases of the autonomic and peripheral nervous systems, and skin and musculoskeletal diseases) are particularly useful as they tackle topics that are generally less well covered in standard introductory textbooks.
Assessment: This remains a readable and informative book that will be useful to trainees and experienced clinicians alike. This edition has a few new authors and provides updated treatment algorithms and recommendations for care.
From the Publisher
"In this, their second stint as editors, Drs Hines and Marschall have retained their previous 'winning formula' by producing a comprehensive reference base of common and some less common diseases in a highly structured and easily read format...This textbook delivers a wealth of information on coexisting disease including recently updated guidelines and recommendations on various medical conditions often encountered in the perioperative period...this is an excellent and well-written edition of Stoelting's popular textbook, which covers the major aspects of coexisting disease in surgical patients...The range and depth of topics presented and discussed in this edition will ensure that it remains a valued resource and, ideally, it should be readily available to all staff (and students) involved in the delivery of anaesthesia."

British Journal of Anaesthesia, March 2013

    poor customer service

DO not buy this book from BN. Book does not work on PC, MAC, I-pad, I-touch... When reported to BN I was told that I did not report the problem on time. After emphasizing to the customer service that the book keeps crashing and is useless they would not refund it. If you plan to read book front to end it may work, however if you use it as a quick reference it will crash every time.
