Overview

She argues with her mother. She occasionally skips class. And she alternately crushes on two totally different boys.

But Chloe King is by no means your typical teenager. The girl can scale buildings and see in the dark. Sometimes, at night, she even likes to leap from rooftop to rooftop. Yes, Chloe has the instincts and ability of a cat. And that makes her unique indeed.

It also makes her a wanted woman.

Because the Order of the Tenth Blade does not deal kindly with people like Chloe. It stalks them. Preys upon them. And wants many of them -- like Chloe, for instance -- dead.

Publishers Weekly
Short one life, the increasingly feline heroine returns in the paperback original The Nine Lives of Chloe King: The Stolen by Celia Thomson. In this sequel, Chloe learns about her non-human ancestry as a member of the ancient Mai people. Her friends Paul and Amy (first met in The Fallen) attempt to help and protect Chloe (now living with others of her kind) from evil agents of the Tenth Blade who try to hunt her down. Move over, Catwoman! Here comes Chloe King! Chloe was a responsible student who liked hanging out with her friends, argued with her mom, and had a part-time job. Her whole world changed, however, on the day before her 16th birthday. She died, and then came back to life. It doesn't take her long to discover that she is undergoing some changes, changes that are a bit different than those caused by normal teenage hormones. For one thing, she can now run at a superhuman pace and not get winded. She can jump high and fall from heights and land on her feet. Oh, and another thing: she now has claws. With her newfound powers, Chloe becomes more confident and she finds herself torn between two suitors—one who represents what the human Chloe wants and the other what the cat Chloe wants. In addition to her problems as a human cat with romance issues, someone is trying to kill her. In the second volume, The Stolen, Chloe's mom has been kidnapped by the Order of the Tenth Blade. Chloe's friends come up with a plan to help Chloe's mom and enlist Brian, one of Chloe's suitors. Chloe learns that she is more powerful than she thought and that she might be next in line to rule her group of Mai. This is an entertaining series that has fast-paced action and quirky twists. With its mix of romance, fantasy and humor, it will be addicting for fans of the whole "teens with magical powers" scene. Thomson's creative ideas and use of Egyptian mythology are a winning combination. The books contain mature language and sexual situations and are perhaps best suited for high school students. Gr 7 Up-From Russia and Eastern Europe comes a breed of humans with feline characteristics called the Mai. Chloe King is one of them. In this second installment in the series, she finds that there are others like her, others with nine lives and the ability to see in the dark. Just as she's beginning to understand her unique powers, the Tenth Blade, a ruthless group out to kill her and the rest of the Mai, strikes again. Having already lost one life, and with her mother and her friends also in danger, Chloe will do anything to stop them. Complicating matters is her growing attraction to Brian, a member of the Tenth Blade. He says he's on her side, but can she believe him? Readers not familiar with the first book may have trouble following the plot as previous events are not summarized here. There is some action, some romance, but, overall, not enough to warrant first purchase.-Ginny Collier, Dekalb County Public Library, Chamblee, GA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

The author of the first Chloe King, Liz Braswell, and the author of this one and the 3rd one, Celia Thomson, are the same person. I just wanted to clarify that Celia Thomson is one of the two pen names of Liz Braswell. -Allison Orchard

I really enjoyed this book after reading The Fallen. This book keeps you on your toes, and you learn more about Chloe's past. Also you get more answers to the questions, in the first book that were never answered. I can't wait for The Chosen!
