Meet the Author

My name is Carol Marrs Phipps and I am a teacher turned author. I was born in Missouri, grew up mostly in Illinois and currently reside in Illinois. My book, Elf Killers, which I wrote with my co-author and fantastic husband, Tom Phipps, was released by Hellfire Publishing on July 15. It is available as both an ebook and paperback and is now currently Indie Publishedby Tom and me. We now also have the first four books in our Epic Fantasy series Heart of the Staff available in eBook and paperback formats available to purchase.Tom and I spent the lion's-share of our teaching careers in the Southwest U.S. (Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada) on different Native American Reservations. I believe we learned as much from our students as they did from us and a large number of them became the first dedicated fans of our stories. We are currently full-time writers. Not long after Tom and I married, I discovered to my joy, that he, too, loved to write. We have been writing together ever since. We are currently working on the 5th book in our epic fantasy series, Heart of the Staff, and have already completed the first four books. We expect to complete the saga with another one or two books. The first four books of this series are: Good Sister, Bad Sister, The Collector Witch, Stone Heart and The Burgeoning. We hope to publish the 5th book sometime in January 2013.

Stone Heart Evalynn Tsosie The struggle between good and evil grows relentlessly more urgent throughout Stone Heart. The sorceress Demonica, beautiful, terrible and three hundred years old, hears that her granddaughter, Spitemorta not only sits on the throne of Loxmere-Goll but has found the Great Staff of Power. Soon the two of them are scouring the countryside, hunting for the crystal Heart of the Staff as they form plans to take over the world. Alarmed that they are out and about, Fuzz, joined by Rose and Lukus (now grown), the wizard Razzmorten and a party of dragons and diatrymas begins a frantic race to reach the Heart before Spitemorta and Demonica. Soon the pair are attacking Niarg and releasing shipload upon shipload of rapacious trolls from the Eastern Continent at the same time that they set out to control the very minds of their people through the use of skinwelers. Phipps and Phipps manage their characters exceptionally well in this book, just as they have in everything of theirs which I've read. Their personalities are fascinating, believable and well developed, whether antagonist or protagonist. Before Spitemorta and Demonica reach the Heart, they are captured briefly by the Beaks, naked, tattooed and blue woad smeared barbarians of the marshy kingdom of Marr who are pictured in such a way that I practically felt them to be kindred spirits, in spite of their impossible geography and place in time. And while their story is a most absorbing adventure to read, their descriptive snippets support it perfectly, instantly forming engaging and wonderfully idylic images in the mind's eye of the reader. Bravo!

As with every other book in the Heart of the Staff series, I was absolutely hooked on this book as well, hating to see it end. I find the imagination of these authors absolutely fantastic, and their writing style is very easy to get the reader completely absorbed in the story. The story details are so vivid that they make it very easy to feel the struggles and pain of the good characters, and it was very entertaining to laugh at the frustrations and bungles in plans of the bad characters. I truly hope these authors continue with their writing... I for one have become a devoted fan!

I like this book better than anything else I've read this year, except maybe Elf Killers, Good Sister, Bad Sister or The Collector Witch. Hey! It's really got places in it. Like when the soldier knocked out the old woman trying to scoop up the little naked boy in her blanket. It made me holler out and stomp around the room before I could read any more. And it's got way more places than that. It took me a really long time to read, like not only about all night, but late enough to miss work. And this time I missed work. But I know everybody would like to read this one, especially. Five stars!
